A closer look

To mark UNESCO’s International Geodiversity Day, the Association for Geoconservation, Hong Kong (AGHK) organised a series of workshops built around the geodiversity of every continent except Antarctica. Dr. Soumaya Ayadi, president of ACE and a teacher of geology, hydrology, and the environment at USJ’s Faculties of Sciences and Engineering, was one of the speakers, presenting Lebanon’s geodiversity as a resource for sustainable development and stressing the need for geo-education.

Her session focused on the geodiversity of the Middle East, a region of unique geology and landforms set against an extraordinarily diverse culture and long history. Because of the region’s political complications in recent decades, its geodiversity has rarely been publicised and remains little known to many people around the world — a gap the workshop set out to help close.
