A closer look

For ACE, protecting heritage and protecting the environment go hand in hand. One initiative set up an atelier for producing wooden backyard composting units, diverting organic material from the waste stream while reusing wooden pallets. The aim is to replicate and spread the practice across as many households as possible, delivering a cleaner, greener environment, affordable kits, less waste, added livelihood, and a steady supply of compost.

ACE also works to safeguard Beirut’s craft heritage. The team has interviewed residents who benefited from the Association for Community and Environment’s help in restoring doors, windows, and wrought iron, as well as the artisans who carried out that work. These conversations feed into a booklet on Beirut’s forgotten heritage, preserving skills and stories that might otherwise be lost.

Looking ahead, ACE is preparing a project proposal with ALIPH to establish a workshop dedicated to reviving Lebanese art. By training a new generation in woodwork and wrought iron, the project seeks to ensure that these traditional crafts continue to thrive.
