A closer look

ACE’s rural development work begins in the city and reaches deep into the countryside. In Beirut, the organisation has valorised green spaces in an urban environment — most notably along an abandoned railway track — through grassroots initiatives to clean neglected areas, rehabilitate soil, and plant open public spaces. The result is greener, more welcoming public corridors created without permanent construction or conflict with local authorities.

In the Tyre caza, ACE has strengthened community preparedness and emergency responsiveness while promoting sorting at source and the recycling of solid waste. The team set up collection points, supplied containers for separate sorting, and ran awareness sessions on waste separation, recycling, and composting. With flyers and other communication material, ACE coordinated with the municipality to collect sorted waste and channel recyclables to the Zahle solid-waste facility.

Water resilience is a further priority. Through the SWIM project — “Saving Water, Growing Crops” — ACE tackles water scarcity and helps preserve available freshwater resources. The initiative restored and rehabilitated three hill lakes and introduced drip irrigation across the lands of Mrusti, using conveyance systems controlled automatically by soil-humidity sensors. New primary, secondary, and tertiary irrigation networks were designed and installed to serve the whole village, allowing farmers to irrigate efficiently and sustainably.
